Wickedly Witchy Wookey Hole Weekend…
The Witch of Wookey Hole
Just had a lovely weekend away with Adam and mum, staying in Wookey and visiting Wells. We stayed opposite Wookey Hole, where the legend of the Witch of Wookey Hole not only persists today, but is a huge tourist attraction. The story began roughly one thousand years ago, when a woman living in the caves was blamed for everything that went wrong with the village. Long story short, she was turned to stone by a holy man. She can still be seen in the caves to this very day. More information here: https://www.wookey.co.uk/wookey-witch/ Even more interesting, the bones of a woman were found in a shallow grave by Herbert Balch. As I understand it, the bones are very old. Makes you wonder, doesn't it?...
Dragons, Zombies, Witches & Wisdom
That title just about sums up my poster wall in my writing space, a converted attic that I tentatively call my ‘office.’ The phrase ‘Meddle not in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and good with ketchup’ is one I love, though it is hard to pin down who originally wrote it. There is some thought that it is a spoof of a phrase from The Lord of the Rings , The Fellowship of the Ring, by J R Tolkein. The original quote is; “Meddle not in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger,” which is also pretty great if you ask me!
As my son pointed out, this phrase could just as easily have been uttered by someone in Discworld, the world created by the wonderful Sir Terry Pratchett. I can just imagine Lady Sybil Ramkin sternly reproaching someone who had gone a little too close to one of her pet dragons, or perhaps stuck their nose in a fraction too much into their activities.
Wherever it comes from, I love it! I intend to add to my wall as time goes on. If I find anything good I will share it with you here. Got a wall of posters or signs yourself? Or maybe you collect something? Feel free to share.
